Employers' liability insuranceIf one of your employees becomes ill or is injured and it is your business’s fault, then you may be liable to pay them compensation. Claims can be for either physical or psychological injury. Employers’ liability insurance covers the costs of compensation or damages and also covers the legal fees, costs and expenses you may face when dealing with a claim.By law, almost all employers must have employers’ liability cover of at least £5m. Our policies give you £10m.
Who needs employers’ liability cover?However safe your premises, however good your safety equipment, however thorough your safety training, accidents can still happen – and claims can run into millions of pounds.
Our employers’ liability coverAll of our policies include employers’ liability insurance, with £10m cover. These policies also include products and public liability cover (see ‘Not to be confused with…’ below).
Some examplesYou own a bookshop. One of your employees damages their back lifting a heavy box of books. Because you haven’t provided the training or equipment that would have prevented the accident, they make a claim against you for damages. You run a garden centre. One of your employees suffers spinal injuries when a stack of pallets that are overloaded with fertiliser collapses. They make a claim against you for damages. You run a video rental store. A member of staff develops a stress disorder and has to take time off sick after the shop is robbed. They make a claim against you because they say you failed to provide adequate security. One of your staff claims against you for a repetitive strain injury after having advised they were having trouble with the amount of data entry in their job and were suffering pain in their wrists and you took no action in changing an unsuitable work area.

Public liability coverThis covers the costs of compensation and legal expenses should a member of the public make a claim against you after being injured or their property damaged by you or your business. Find out more about public liability cover
Products liability coverIf you supply a product and something goes wrong with it, you may be liable - even if you didn’t manufacture the product. Products liability insurance covers you for the costs of compensation and legal expenses. Find out more about products liability cover
Legal expenses coverLegal expenses insurance includes cover for compensation awards payable in employment disputes cases and claims relating to section 13 of the Data Protection Act but it isn’t a replacement for liability insurance – our public, product and employers' liability insurance will cover you against these costs.
