Buildings and contents insurance

Fire, flood, theft, accidental damage – there are lots of ways in which your property can be destroyed or damaged. Buildings and contents insurance – also called ‘property insurance’ – covers your business assets against loss, damage and destruction.

Who needs buildings and contents cover?

However small your business, you’ll have some property that your business depends on. And you’ll have an address from which you work. Unless you can afford to cover the costs of losing your property yourself, you’ll need buildings and contents insurance.

Our buildings and contents cover

Our business insurance policies include buildings and contents insurance as standard. (Our homeworker policy only covers buildings and contents used solely for the business.)

Some examples

You run a picture framing business. Your workshop is destroyed by fire. You lose not only the building, but all your equipment, materials and stock. You face the costs of rebuilding, re-equipping and re-stocking your workshop.

You run a bicycle shop. Someone smashes the shop window while you are busy serving customers and steals a bicycle from the window display. You need to repair the window and replace the lost stock.

Not to be confused with

Business interruption cover

Your buildings and contents insurance will replace or repair damaged or lost property. It doesn’t insure you against the business income you may lose while the problem is sorted out – this is what Business interruption insurance does.

or Money cover

Money insurance can cover loss of cash and non-negotiable money from your business premises – items which won’t be covered by your general buildings and contents insurance.
